The Association of Fast Food and Confectioners of Nigeria, AFFCON, an umbrella body of Quick Service Restaurants, QSR in Nigeria, said it contributes an annual revenue of N200 billion into the growth of the economy.
AFFCON among other things said its members have also paid over N1billion to various tiers of government in taxes and levies. The President of the body, Mrs. Bose Ayeni, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the forthcoming inaugural National Conference of the association with theme: ‘The Role of Fast Food Business in the Global Economy,’ which is scheduled to hold in Lagos, by September 4, 2013. Speaking on the role the fast food industry plays in Nigeria, Ayeni said that the industry employs over 500,000 workers at processing and retailing levels, in addition to paying over one billion naira to the various tiers of government in taxes and levies. Stressing the prime position food occupies in human existence, Ayeni said: “Food is at the top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. That buttresses the primacy of food in human existence. Life is not sustainable without food. With AFFCON, food becomes an experience to anticipate, enjoy and cherish, presented always in a cosy and hygienic environment.” Ayeni who said that the Nigerian fast food industry is a significant contributor to the Nigerian economy, with an estimated annual revenue of N200 billion, and pays over N1 billion to the various tiers of government in taxes and levies has a massive growth potential and is dominated by some 100 small-to medium –sized indigenous brands with over 800 outlets spread across have potential to become big given the right environment to thrive. The president who among other things complained of the challenges bedeviling the industry, said top on the list is inadequate power supply, whilst pointing out that about 30 percent of the gross profit made by the fast food companies is used to service power supply. She went further to say that next is the multiplicity of taxes and levies. “This is compounded by the overlapping functions of several regulatory agencies. These overlapping functions and a lack of coordination amongst such regulators lead to heavy financial burden on fast food companies. She however pleaded with government to ensure that the different regulators have distinct roles that do not overlap. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/fast-food-contributes-n200bn-to-economy-annually-affcon/ |

Fertility Clinics Buy Sperm From Lagosians For N50,000 - Health
People get married for different reasons. While some seek companionship in marriage, many go into marriage for procreation. For couples who look forward to having children immediately after marriage, being declared ‘infertile’ by experts is like a death sentence.
While it is generally agreed that it takes two to have a baby and every couple is expected to be in optimum health to have babies, medical experts claim men are having more fertility challenge now. Sperm concentration in men is said to have decreased by a third since 1990s while sperm count is said to have decreased by half over the past 50 years.
Studies are also showing genetic abnormalities in sperm particularly in older men. For men therefore, quantity, quality and motility of spermatozoa are seen as important factors in fertility.
Since the male factor is a prominent cause of infertility in couples, sperm donation has become vital in assisted conception treatment.
A study by the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction stated that “a male factor is solely responsible in about 20 per cent of infertile couples and contributory in another 30 to 40 per cent.”
According to experts, even when sperm numbers are great, a high proportion of men may have DNA damage that significantly impairs the chances of natural conception. Besides, male sperm deteriorates with age the same way it does for women.
Studies have also shown that if a man has poor health, smokes, drinks too much or has a bad diet, it’s very likely his sperms are also going to be unhealthy.
Indeed, investigation by Saturday PUNCH showed that sperm has become a commodity in high demand in Lagos. The Chief Consultant and Head, Obstetrician and Fertility Department, Eko Hospitals, Dr. Adegbite Ogunmokun, said fertility problem, based on recent experience, had tilted more towards the male factor.
He said, “If 10 couples come in, there will be problem with the male in six of them, using our parameter of 20 million sperm per millimetre. But 10 to 15 years ago, maybe about four out of 10 men would have problem.”
Our correspondents, who visited some fertility centres in Lagos, learnt that more men are having low sperm count, thus necessitating the need for more volunteer donors. But because donors are scare, fertility clinics offer as much as N50,000 to men who are interested in selling their sperm.
They also pay more when sellers have special features that the beneficiaries are looking for.
Like blood sellers, investigations show that many people in Lagos, especially students, now sell their sperms anytime they need money.
A student of the University of Lagos, who identified himself as John, said he had sold sperm to a few fertility centres in Lagos. John said he had been funding his education for the past two years with what he earned from selling his sperm.
John said he was introduced to the programme by a friend and that he had in turn brought in two other friends to ‘business’.
“I’ve sold to a number of fertility centres. The money has really helped me to stay in school. It takes care of my tuition and some other personal needs,” John said, with a measure of satisfaction.
“It’s cool money, really and I’m also doing a service to mankind by helping out some people in need. Even friends that I introduced to it have not turned back since then.”
An employee in a Lagos fertility clinic, who identified himself as Olufunsho, told Saturday PUNCH that some women would pay any amount to get a sperm seller with the features they want.
He said, “We pay N50,000 here but there are times when women come in and request that, at all cost, they must get a tall man. The person can earn more when they make such requests, especially if we don’t have any that fits the profile in our bank.
“There was a time a woman came and requested that we get a tall man for her at all cost. I showed her the samples we had, but she did not like the profile. She said she was not satisfied with the heights. And we were unable to get what she wanted from the sellers that came at the time.
“The sellers that came then were either AS, or positive with hepatitis B or had low sperm count. We had up to twelve sellers that came and we were unable to get anybody. In such cases, we could offer a lot more when we find the right person. Sometimes, such people are also in a position to negotiate for what they want.”
However, subsequent drops attract lesser amounts of money for the same seller.
To sell sperm, the person, according to Olufunsho, must stay off sex for five days. He undergoes some tests to confirm that he is not HIV positive and that he also has healthy sperm among others.
He said, “If the same person is still interested and we still need him, he would repeat the screening process again. We pay N10, 000 per expulsion for other subsequent ones. With my own discretion, if the quality of the sperm is good and we have somebody who needs something that matches perfectly with that seller, we may reduce the probation period, but the sperm must be very good.
“Although that is the protocol, it could always be amended when there is nothing wrong with the person. Even if someone ejaculates the first time and in twenty minutes time, he does the same, it is still going to be good, but not as good as the first one.”
At the various fertility centres where our correspondents posed as potential sperm seller, the clinic workers made keen attempts to have them start the process immediately, by leaving blood samples for tests.
On one occasion, a clinic worker told one of our correspondents that he was willing to waive the two to five days’ probation period of abstinence, after our correspondent said he wished to “sleep over it.”
The worker said, “What is there to think about? After all, you already said you’re not married. You can leave your blood sample for testing while you go ahead and think over it.”
Investigation showed that fertility centres want sellers between 18 and 45 years of age and expect them to abstain from sex, two to five days before giving sperm sample, depending on the centre.
Other conditions to be met by potential sperm sellers include testing negative to HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, sickle cell and some other sexually transmitted diseases. Tests are also carried out to determine the count, morphology (shape) and motility of the sperm cells.
In addition, fertility centres claim to also place a high premium on average intelligence, education and lifestyle. Although, Saturday PUNCH learnt that such claims are not always true as more emphases are actually placed on height and other physical attributes.
“It is not immediately that we pay. We prefer AA genotype because it can be given to anybody, unlike AS that cannot be given to just anybody,” Olufunsho added.
However, an employee in another fertility clinic in Lagos, Akin, said sperm sellers could get paid within a week of starting the process. This is possible only if they satisfy the conditions.
He said, “If the motility is good, the count is good and you’re okay, then, you can produce for us. If everything is okay, within a week, you can get your money.”
A 2012 study into the reproductive health of 26,600 men in France, warned of a sperm crisis worldwide. It said that sperm concentration has decreased by a third since the 1990s. The study found a continuous 32.2 per cent decrease in sperm concentration over a period of 17 years.
During the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology annual conference in London in July 2013, some experts, critical of the study’s validity, said it did not completely represent the situation in certain areas, particularly the developing world.
However, a fertility expert at Mother’s World Care, Ikeja, Lagos, Dr. Margaret Olusegun, said the situation is similar in Nigeria.
She said, “A man should have a good count, up to 40 to 50 million sperm per millimetre of Fluid upward. But you find that these days, men have more challenges with fertility than women.
“Although, I don’t have the statistics, men are the ones with more challenges now, even though they are the ones who drive out their wives if they can’t bear children.”
Olusegun explained that good sperm should have “at least 50 per cent motility (activeness) because sperm cells can be active, sluggish or dead.”
“For morphology (shape) too, which could be normal or abnormal, sperm should have upward of 50 per cent normal cells. And there should not be bacteria growth,” she added.
Ogunmokun described low concentration of sperm as “Oligospermia.” He, however, said a sperm count with a minimum lower limit of 20 million sperm per millimetre of Fluid would still be considered normal. But he added that any sperm concentration of less than 20 million per millimetre of Fluid could be categorised as mild, moderate or severe oligospermia, depending on the count.
Ogunmokun said fertility problems could be with the man, the woman or the two of them.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the demand for sperm has made the fertility business a lucrative one. Many of the fertility centres in Lagos have facilities for sperm preservation, where it’s freezing costs about N50, 000 per quarter.
Ogunmokun said, “After collection, the Fluid is processed and seminal fluid and all other things are removed. The sperm is put in little bottles and placed in special containers called dewars, connected to a power source. It is stored at very low temperature and there must be an indicator for monitoring should there be a change in the condition.”
He, however, added that there must be a standby generator in a place like Nigeria, where power supply is unstable, as sperm can be frozen for decades.
“Although, there are many other reasons why people freeze sperm, someone living far away from his wife can decide to freeze his sperm for the wife’s use while he’s away. Also, someone going for cancer treatment can freeze his sperm before starting the treatment since such treatments affect sperm production,” he added.
Ogunmokun said fertility centres focus more on university undergraduates to ensure that sperm donors have a certain degree of intelligence.
He said, “The current practice is to actually recruit sperm donors and the focus is on undergraduates. The focus is on students because they should be able to provide their ID cards so that background checks can be done.”
According to Ogunmokun, the perceived increase in the number of men with low sperm count is as a result of infection and lifestyle habits like sitting for too long and wearing of tight underwear.
He said, “The testes are not supposed to be too close to the body because of the higher body temperature. The testes are naturally colder, so people who travel long distances or sit in traffic for long can be prone to infertility.”
Ogunmokun advised that men should “exercise appropriately, take good nutrition, avoid tight underwear, premarital sex, cigarette and alcohol to try to prevent low sperm count.”
However, Olusegun identified good hygiene as key to the prevention of low sperm count, saying, “Our environment is too contaminated

How Games Control Human Mind
IT has been Discovered that Games being played by the less matured or immature audience leads to violent acts and behaviors and is very Surprising.Games play A major role in developmental tendencies and expiratory in attitudes Among Teens. Fir instance, How can someone play game for like 12 hours anddoesn't feel Like eating, Drinking, Sleepingor getting up to Do anything for the Day. Worse even if its a vacation Day we can imagine such hours cannot be expended in playing Games for that long. Now , its obvious that when the level of Mind control gets so altered then the player wants to exhibit such characters as depicted in such games. It looks like for instance all those Arcade games like Modern combat, God's Hand, Ps2 and Ps3 become so time consuming and then Obsessive. I think that when we feel we cannot do without it then it becomes more hypnotic than enjoying. A child playing Games wont want to do any kind of house chores again, respond to calls, becomes angry at responding to call to do things. Thatch so hooking

Lingering ASUU Strike: A Festering Sore On The Nation’s Conscience – PENGASS
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) views with deep concern and discontent the ongoing and indeed a recurring strike in our nation’s ivory towers by the Academic Staff Unions of our Universities (ASUU) which has entered its 9th week without any sign of being resolved soon as parties in the crisis continue to trade blame and spoil for more actions on the matter.
We have watched with keen interest as the Dr. Nasir Issa Faggie-led ASUU declared a 3-day warning strike before it finally embarked on an indefinite strike action on July 1, 2013 towards ensuring that the Federal Government honoured the cardinal agreements reached with theUniversity lecturers since 2009. Accordingto ASUU, those agreements include: -
•Injection of proper funds to revitalize the Nigerian Universities
•Provision of Federal Government’s Assistance to state universities
•Progressive increase of annual budgetary allocation to education to 26%between 2009 and 2020, and Earned Allowances, Amendment and the Pension Retirement age of academics on the profession cadre from 65 to 70 years
•Establishment of the Pension Fund Administrator Governing Council
•Transfer of Federal Government’s landedproperties to universities as the setting up of research and development units by companies operating in Nigeria as well asteaching and research equipment.
In essence, ASUU is simply asking the Federal Government for proper funding of the universities to bring them to the level to compete with world acclaimed and prestigious ones which the University of Ibadan (UI), the premier University once attained as one of the 10 best Universities in the world.
While the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Pius Anyim led Government Team is insisting that Government cannot afford full adherence to those agreements, ASUU is insisting it cannot shift ground on any of the alreadyagreed issues since according to it, necessary concessions were granted before those Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) were reached with the Federal Government in 2009.
Though President Jonathan may not be the President then, since government is a continuum, the administration is duty bound to implement the signed agreements as he was also the second in command.
Against all the stated backdrop and considering the enormous toll incessant strikes have had on the nation’s university education system, which to say the least, has made the country’s best University today to rank only amongst thehinds 6,000 in the world while most of our graduates are simply ‘unemployable’, the nation’s scarce resources are routinely frittered away through unabated sleaze and in the face of endemic corruption at all levels of governance.
PENGASSAN joins millions of concerned Nigerians and groups to appeal to Suswam led Committee to sheath their sword by embracing dialogue as a meansof finding a lasting solution to the recurring problem of under funding of the nation’s education. This is so as education remains a major plank for sustainable development and veritable means of rediscovering the dream of the founding fathers of the nation.
More worrisome for the majority of the talented youths whose sponsored can not afford a private or foreign school, andhave rested all hope in the public schools now imagine the kind of future generation they are bound to build as they are turned out half-baked as a result of irregular and sandwiched session and curriculum.
PENGASSAN cannot but frowns at the degenerating Government habit of reneging on Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) freely entered into. While Government feigns to be contending with financial challenges over ASUU’ demans. We strongly advise Government to refocus the nation’s budget and expenditures to priorities areas which education stands out by using this strike events to declare a State of Emergency in the Education Sector with a view to finally securing it forbetter rewarding future of our youths.
My Top Ten Mistakes In Nigerian Movies (nollywood) This Year
10. “DOCTOR BELLO”
Dr Bello (Jimmy Jean-Louis) was supposedto be a Nigerian, yet spoke with a French/Haitian accent. You think Nigerians don’t know what a Nigerian accent sounds like?
9. “FALSE”
Doctor Bella (Okonkwo Monalisa) said an X-Ray showed that Emelda’s (Uche Jombo)blood vessels were damaged. An X-Ray does not show blood vessels.
8. “PLAYING SAFE”
Femi (Sexy Steel) and Emeka (Smart Maxwell) who were best friends had never met each other’s fiancées. Is that really possible? Especially when there’s noindication that Vivian (Ini Edo) or both guys knew to suggest that any was deliberately hiding from the other.
7. “ANCHOR BABY”
When Joyce (Omoni Oboli) gives birth at the hospital, there is no blood on the newborn nor is there an umbilical cord which should have been cut to separate the infant from the mother.
6. “WEEKEND GETAWAY”
As the Concierge (Bishop Imeh-Umoh) reaches for a kiss from Ogechi (Ini Edo), amale voice in the background is heard saying " go closer" and "closer", as the Concierge (Bishop Imeh-Umoh) leans even further to receive a slap.
5. “LAST FLIGHT TO ABUJA”
The movie opened with radio voice-over of the "Good Morning Nigeria Show" with"Manny and the Angels" on Cool FM, Lagos. In 2006, the Good Morning NigeriaShow was hosted by Dan Foster and not Manny and the Angels.
4. “MR & MRS”
The lawyer (Chioma Nwosu) refers to the story of “the Virtuous Woman” that David wrote about in the bible. The Virtuous Woman was in the book of Proverbs 31, which was written by King Solomon and not David.
3. “DOCTOR BELLO”
They left for Unilag to see the Dean of Medicine. The Dean of Medicine’s office isn’t at the University of Lagos (Unilag) Akoka, but in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital’s (LUTH) College of Medicine Idi-Araba.
2. “GIRLS IN THE MOOD”
When a gun is fired, where should the smoke come from?(See image below)
1. “THE PLACE – THE CHRONICLE OF THE BOOK”
After death, people queued up for judgment at heaven’s gate. Didn’t people die from other countries or was that the Nigerian gate?
NLC To Resolve ASUU/FG Face-off
THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday said it will ask the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resume negotiation with the Federal Government for the resolution of their differences.
NLC President, comrade Abdulwahed Omar, spoke after the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
He said there were reports that the union had issued a statement to withdraw from the negotiations with the Federal Government.
Omar said: “Congress resolved at the meeting that we are also going to makeconsultations to ensure that the negotiations resume immediately. We want to ensure that they are resumed to resolve the issues, not to resume andcontinue to dangle around without making any headway. We are also going to study the situation and make some proposals.
“But we, at the meeting, also did deliberate on one or two other issues, particularly on the issue of strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“We are all aware that ASUU has issued a statement saying it will withdraw from the negotiation with the Federal Government following the government’s failure to make a headway in the negotiation.
“According to the paper I read, it was also due to the lack of seriousness on the part of government concerning the negotiation. I think it is a very serious situation we are facing today, that we allow the lecturers to remain on strike for upward of two months without resolving the issues. I think it is a very serious issue.”
Interior Minister Abba Moro yesterday urged ASUU to reduce its demands. .
He said university students should also advise their teachers to review downwards their demands and yield togovernment’s position.
The minister spoke in Abuja when he received officials of the National Union of Benue State Student (NUBSS).
He said: “I assure you that the ongoing strike is one that the Federal Government is tackling headlong. In spite of the problems that have hindered further discussions, the government will continue to explore all avenues that are aimed at resolving the crisis in our universities, especially now that the government has given money to tackling all the problems in our universities for infrastructure.
“Since you are children, I expect that some of your teachers are also parents. The government is making efforts to letASUU see things from the position of the government, expect that you too have a role to play as students.
“You must be in the position to advise and sometimes plead with teachers to take into consideration the future of the youth as leaders of tomorrow and mellow down on some of their demands…”
House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to explore other means to resolve its differences with the Federal Government other than the ongoing strike.
The lawmaker said incessant strikes aredetrimental to the country’s educationalsystem and standard.
Lawan spoke yesterday in Abuja on the lingering ASUU action, which he said has dire consequences on the nation’s education sector.

Mother Of The Boy Who Flew From Benin To Lagos In Arik’s Plane TyreSpeaks
The mother of the 13-year-old stowaway, Ricky Daniel Ohikhena, who on Friday hid in the tyre compartment ofan Arik plane on a flight from Benin to Lagos, was on Monday quizzed for hours by a combined team of security operatives from the Department of StateSecurity Service and aviation security.
And she says her son was a nice boy who never displayed any tendency for such a dangerous venture.
An embattled Evelyn said Daniel was a nice boy who did not mingle with bad friends.
She said:
My son answers Daniel in school and Ricky at home. I went to my elder sister’s place who put to bed and when I got home the next morning (Saturday), I couldn’t find him. My daughter told me that they quarrelled in the night because he woke at midnight to watch movies and she toldhim to stop watching movie in the night and she said he eventually slept in the parlour while she said she went back to sleep in the room.
One of his younger brothers said he saw him remove all his school books from his bag; so I asked my neighbours whether any of them saw him and they told me that at around 5 to 6 am, they heard sounds that somebody was opening the gate but never thought it was my son. He doesn’t go out. What I know is that he is always watching films in the house but he doesn’t have friends.
I went to Oba Market police station, they referred me to Evbuotubu police station, when I got there they said they will declare him missing after 24 hours and that I should come back thenext day.”
He is always at home, I have never seen anybody come to look for him and he doesn’t have friends. I am begging the government to help me, because I have never been to the airport before, I have been to Lagos before so they should help me. I don’t know how he manage to get there butI just thank God that he is alive.
#Day59 ASUU strike: There is no need for the lecturers to continue – President Jonathan
So it’s the 59th day and here’s the latest update!
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said there was no need for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue with their industrial action. Mr. Jonathan said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
Represented by Ruqayyat Rufai, the Minister of Education, the president saidN30 billion had been released for the payment of earned allowances in all public universities.
The president said that the inaugurated projects were in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to providing quality education in the country. He said the projects were based on the need assessment exercise conducted by the Federal Government in universities.
University lecturers have been on a nationwide strike for over 8 weeks withthe lecturers demanding a full implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the federal government. While the government says it has provided N30 billion for earned allowances of lecturers, the lecturers said about N92 billion is required to completely offset the earned allowances of the concernedlecturers. That and other demands are the reasons the lecturers have continued with their strike
How To Calculate Your Body Mass Index
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement tool that compares your height to your weight and gives you an indication of whether you are overweight, underweight or at a healthy weight for your height. For details on calculating your BMI manually, follow the steps below.
Weigh & Measure
1. Weigh yourself on your bathroom scale.Note: the following formula is calculated in pounds.
2. Measure your height in inches using the yardstick or measuring tape. Stand against the wall and use a pencil to make a mark at the top of your head, then measure.
Calculating Your BMI Manually
1. Use the pencil, paper and calculator to perform the following BMI calculation.
2. Take your height in inches and square the number. In other words, multiply the number of inches by the same number of inches.
3. Divide your weight in pounds by the second figure. The second figure is your height in inches squared.
4. Multiply that answer by the conversion factor of 703 if you used inches and pounds. Skip if you used meters and kilograms. The answer is your body mass index.
BMI INTERPRETATIONS
-A BMI of less than 18 means you are under weight.
-A BMI of less than 18.5 indicates you are thin for your height.
-A BMI between 18.6 and 24.9 indicates you are at a healthy weight.
-A BMI between 25 and 29.9 suggests you are overweight for your height.
-A BMI of 30 or greater indicates obesity. If you are obese, consider consulting a doctor or losing weight.

Burnaboy's Camp Denies He Assaulted Any Lady In PH
According to one of Burna Boy’s aides, Burnaboy didn't slap the young girl as another eyewitness said. She says she too was at the scene, and nothing of such happened.
It was just an argument and Burna Boy never slapped anyone. Arguments are meant to come up but because the person in question is a public figure, much importance is now attached to it. He was never arrested because the said show he went for in Port Harcourt was a Hennessy show in which he performed. So how will an arrested man perform in a show at the same time? The stories are all false

Things You Didnt Know Were Invented By Kids
I didn't invent anything, but i did create lots of stuff from scrap. e.g using Peak milk tins and bathroom slippers to make battery powered cars and making a gigantuan torchlight from discarded batteries. Here are 7 Things You Didn’t Know Were Invented By Kids...Enjoy!
Anyone who’s gotten to know a child knows how incredible they can be. Sure, they blurt out embarrassing observations in public, but that’s because they don’t filter their thoughts. And yes, they occasionally ruin wallpaper with crayons or finger paint, but that’s because their creativity knows no bounds. Here are seven examples of children whose imagination and ingenuity produced something extraordinary.
Toy Truck
In 1963, 6-year-old child inventor Robert Patch created a convertible toy truck. Patch had two goals for his truck: one, that it could easily be taken apart and put back together; two, that it could transform into all sorts of different vehicles. After drawing up a sketch, the boy got a patent for his idea, and the rest was playtime history
Trampoline
In 1930, when George Nissen was a 16-year-old high school gymnast, he began tinkering with an idea for a bouncing apparatus to train on. But it wasn’t until 1934 that Nissen and his University of Iowa tumbling coach Larry Griswold built a device that actually worked. Then, in 1937, when Nissen was traveling the carnival circuit, he came across the Spanish word
trampolin, which means “diving board.” Adding an “e” to the end, he trademarked the name for what was to become a backyard family favorite.
Snow Mobile
In 1922, when Canadian Joseph-Armand Bombardier was 15 years old, he was tinkering around with his dad’s old Ford Model T motor and decided to attach it to a sled to see if the machine could power through the snow. He enlisted the help of his brother to steer while he took control of the motor, and the first inklings of a powered snow machine were born. Fifteen years later his device, the B-7, was the first snowmobile to hit stores.
Television
Just about everyone owns a TV, but did you ever dream that a teenager came up with the idea? In 1920, 14-year-old Philo Farnsworth first conceived of it, supposedly while he was plowing a potato field. In 1926, he and his business partner founded Crocker Research Laboratories (later named Farnsworth Radio and Television Corporation); only one year after that, the first-ever transmitted images were sent.
Popsicles
In 1905, when Frank Epperson was 11 years old, he was trying to concoct his own version of soda pop. One particularly cold night, he left his beverage—a glass filled with soda water powder and water—outside on the porch by accident, with the mixing stick still in it. The ingredients froze overnight and Epperson was inspired. In 1924, after the young inventor had some success in the real estate business, he applied for a patent, naming his creation the Epsicle. Later, it was changed it to the now well-known Popsicle.
Earmuffs
Chester Greenwood grew up ice skating in his native Maine. One day in 1873, the 15-year-old finally became so annoyed with how cold his ears became outdoors that he asked his grandmother to sew fur onto a two-loop wire he created. Soon he had a patented and approved model of what he originally called ear protectors. The state of Maine is so thankful for his invention that every December 21 is celebrated as “Chester Greenwood Day.”
Braille
Born in France in 1809, Louis Braille was blinded by an injury when he was only 3 years old. In 1824, while he was a 15-year-old student at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, he created a type of reading that involved raised, imprinted dots organized in a pattern to facilitate learning. The first Braille book was released in 1829—and Louis Braille went on to become an instructor at the school where he had once been a student.

10,000 Olokola Workers To Lose Jobs
Nigeria’s unemployment situation is set to worsen as the fate of about 10,000 workers in the Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas project, OKLNG, is currently on the line, following the pulling out of Chevron and Shell, which threatens continuation of the project.
The workers, currently employed in the construction phase of the project, risk being disengaged, as Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, yesterday, confirmed its withdrawal from the OKLNG project, blaming it on the lack of progress on the project, eight years after its inception.
Vanguard had, last Friday, exclusively reported that Chevron and Shell had pulled out of the project, citing non-commitment on the part of the Federal Government to pursue the completion of the project and the non-passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill.
Shell has refused to confirm its pull-out as Chevron did, thereby raising questions as to the reason for the secrecy.
Likewise, the word is mum at Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, the principal partner in the project, which had been informed on the oil majors’ decisions, and had over the years seconded a lot of its staff to the OKLNG project.
However, after almost a month of taking the decision, Chevron, in a statement by its General Manager, Policy, Government & Public Affairs, Mr. Deji Haastrup, said that the company effectively pulled out of the project on July 31.
It added that efforts over the last eight years to mature the project had not resulted in a final investment decision, FID.
The statement also confirmed that Shell pulled out of the OKLNG project on July 31.

11-Yr-Old Girl Saves Family From Fire
A California girl saved her siblings from their burning home after she had a gut feeling that danger was imminent.
Many people claim to have experienced premonitions — those eerie, foreboding feelings that something unpleasant is about to happen. They can run from the mundane (knowing who's calling before answering the phone) to the disastrous (dreaming that a loved one will pass away). And sometimes they’re simply uneasy feelings that bad luck is on the horizon.
That’s exactly what 11-year-old Maria Elias of McFarland, California, experienced when she went to bed on Saturday night. "I couldn't go to sleep because I knew something was going to happen," Maria told KGET TV 17.
Sure enough, at 1:30 a.m., a fire broke out in her family's three-bedroom home, causing an estimated $85,000 worth of damage. Maria fought back tears as she told KGET how she got her two younger brothers and sister to safety and was holding her sister "tight" to ensure that she didn't leave her behind.
Yahoo! Shine could not reach Maria or her family for comment, and it’s unclear exactly how the little girl ushered her siblings to safety. However, Corey Wilford of the Kern County Fire Department told Yahoo! Shine, “Based on witness testimony, the fire was electrical. A person who was sleeping in the home heard a loud pop and smelled smoke, then saw fire erupt on the wall.”
According to a Kern County Fire Department press release emailed to Yahoo! Shine, two people escaped through a window in the home, and in total, eight adults and 12 children were displaced by the fire. All are now being assisted by the American Red Cross.
“I would advise people to have at least one working smoke detector in the home,” said Wilford. “Replace your batteries twice a year and test the detector once a month to make sure it’s functioning. Also, vacuum the detector periodically because dust can prevent it from sensing smoke, or even set off false alarms.” (Visit the National Fire Protection Association website for more tips.)
Whether or not Elias experienced a premonition — and whether premonitions actually even exist — is a hotly debated topic. While many in the spiritual world have long accepted premonitions as fact, science has begun to explore the phenomenon as well. A recent study conducted by Northwestern University found that the human body can react to danger before the brain is conscious of the impending event. And research conducted by Cornell University found that people were able to predict with 53.4 percent accuracy where a photo was located when asked to choose between two locations. Not statistically mind-blowing, but according to a story published in Popular Science, the results were more impressive than the 50 percent accuracy rate that might be expected by

The Dangers Of Drinking Soda, Energy Drinks, Coke Or Mineral Water
When ever you visit someones house the first thing they offer you is soda/mineral water. These drinks are harmful to your health and researhers have linked them to Kidney problems. These sugary drinks also contribute to diabetes/sugar disease. Every single person I know that has diabetes or kidney problems consumed these drinks daily. On top of soda some even consume beer and other alcoholic beverages which further strains your kidney. I was astonished on seeing the amount of sugar people put in tea and pap All of these take a toll on your body. Please eat to live not live to eat!
Back to soda and energy drinks I have pointed out dangers and added credible articles below:
Type 2 Diabetes Owing to the presence of large amounts of sugar, soda pop beverages and energy drinks are capable of increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in individuals. Since obesity and diabetes are related to each other, obese people consuming soft drinks on a daily basis are susceptible to develop insulin resistance. When a can of soft drink is consumed, sugar is directly poured into the blood stream and the pancreas has to produce more insulin to metabolize the sugars. Long-term consumption reduces the insulin-producing capacity of the pancreas, thus disrupting the regulation of sugars in the body, ultimately leading to diabetes.
Kidney ProblemsStudies suggest that consumption of soda pop also leads to the development of kidney problems like reduced kidney function and kidney stones. Researchers inferred that women who drank more than 2 cans of diet soda everyday had reduced kidney function over a time span of 20 years, which was thrice the rate of reduction in women who did not consume it. Formation of kidney stones is triggered by the depletion of calcium from bones, leading to the formation of calcium stones in the kidneys.
Cardiovascular Problems
Obese and diabetic individuals who do not control the intake of soda pop are highly susceptible to develop cardiac problems like high blood pressure, arrhythmia s, and other vascular problems. Studies have also revealed that people who consumed only one can of diet soda per day had 20 percent increased risk of suffering a heart attack over a time span of 22 years. This shows that heart problems are not particular to sweeten or diet soda pop, and can occur with excessive intake of any of these.
Caffeine Addiction
Caffeine, being a mild stimulant, brings about a feeling of well-being when consumed. Since it is a component of soda pop, people consume significant quantities of it when they drink 3-4 cans of the beverage every day. Daily consumption of soda develops into an addiction due to caffeine's mild addictive nature, and people start suffering from withdrawal symptoms like headache, irritation, etc., when the daily dose is not consumed.
Occasional consumption of soda pop, in moderation, may not pose any health risk. However, the extent to which people have started consuming these beverages nowadays is a big reason to worry. Youngsters fall for soda pop due to its great taste, but unknowingly drag themselves towards several health problems. Awareness of these dangers must be spread to people all over, and sessions must be held to teach people how to stop drinking soda pop. Few measures like drinking water or other substitutes, like iced tea, juice or flavored water frequently, will curb the desire to drink soda pop and take a person towards the healthy path of life.

If all goes as planned, Nigerian international footballer, Obafemi Martins, will release a hiphop album by the end of the year.
A studio rat who did not want his name in print and is privy to the album project said the forward for Seattle Sounders FC of the United States has completed work on at least three tracks for the album that is heavy on the Nigerian genre of hip-hop.
“He is passionate about the album and has been working on it at two recording studios, one in Surulere and the other in the Lekki area of Lagos,” the source saiAsked if he has any idea why the footballer who is apparently doing well in his football career would choose to do music, he said Obafemi Martins has always loved music.
“As a matter of fact, he told me that before the big football leagues around the world came calling, he used to be a rapper. Music was his first love eve before football came along,” the source said.
He could not be reached for comment as at press time but the man described as his mentor, Mr. Femi Fasetire, who is a sports journalist confirmed that the footballer likes music “like most people”. He however said that he is not aware that the player is working on an album.
“Perhaps that is because entertainment is not my line since I am a sports journalist,” Fasetire said. There is no doubt that millions of Obafemi Martin’s football fans cannot wait for the release of this album, which our source said is still untitled and which songs are basically performed in English
Other Nigerian footballers who have gone the music way include recently: Michel Obi, (who now owns a music label, Matured Money Minds, MMM), as well as Celestine Babayaro and Jonathan Akpoborie
