The winner of the maiden edition of
World Muslimah Pageant, Obabiyi
Aisha has denied opening a new
Facebook page account with the
name, Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola (Public
Figure), warning friends to ignore
any message from the handler.
Her post on Sunday, September 29,
2013 read, “Hello everyone, thanks
for the greetings. I also want to
inform all my friends that the new
facebook (page) account
with
“Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola (Public
Figure)” was not created by me.
Please any post from the page is not
from me. Thank you all for
understanding.”
The fake Facebook with hundreds of
followers was opened shortly after
Aisha was declared winner of the
controversial pageant that has
continued to receive global
comdemnation. Although, the
intention of the imposter is not
known.
Further enquiries from the Urban
and Regional Planning student of
University of Lagos was not fruitful.
She said, “I got your message sir,
but I won’t be able to answer those
questions now. May be when I am
back in Nigeria. Am very sorry for
any inconvenience, I am a little bit
occupied. Thanks so much sir for
your kind understanding.”
Meanwhile, foremost Islamic
scholar, Shaykh Abdur-Rahmad
Ahmad has described the pageant as
foreign to Islam, insisting that the
beauty of a muslim woman should
be appreciated by her husband
alone.
The National Missioner of Ansar-Ud-
Deen Society of Nigeria spoke with
ENCOMIUM Weekly on Saturday,
September 28, 2013 on the issue…
‘The pageant is foreign to Islam’
- SHAYKH ABDUR RAHMAN AHMAD
Bismillah Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem.
Islam is a complete religion that
does not need any reformation or
revision. It guides muslims in all
aspects of life including economic,
political and spiritual. It is a
complete way of life, there are
guidelines for every human action.
Islam particularly frowns at the
display of beauty by women. The
display of beauty is part of what
Islam has prohibited. So, I do not
know where the organizers of
beauty pageant get the basis for
displaying the beauty of a woman.
In Islam, a woman is not an object
of entertainment. Islam looks at her
as a complete being.
She is not valuable only for her
looks or for her body composition or
for her statistics. She should be
looked at as a member of the
society in her contributions
intellectually and otherwise. It is not
just for the entertainment value or
sex values, no. So, in real essence, I
can say that such beauty pageants is
not something that has been heard
of in Islam. It is very new indeed.
However, there is no religion that
does not have its own values. No
ideology that does not have its own
values. This is foreign to Islamic
ideology.
From the mixed reactions gathered,
there are views that this particular
matter falls under ‘mustashabihat’
ambiguities. What’s your take on it?
It’s not ambiguous. It’s called A-
tabarruj which is the proper Islamic
term for the display of beauty or
ornament by women. It is not
mustashabihat, something
ambiguous. There are clear Islamic
rules on how a woman should dress
and how she should live right.
Some learned Islamic scholars
commended and also supported the
pageant which actually shows that
we have support for it. What do you
have to say about it?
Islam is one thing, individual is other
thing. When there are issues
concerning Islam, we are looking at
the Quran and Sunnah of the
Prophet (SAW). Those are the basis
for our judgment, not what
individuals said.
How best can we appreciate the
beauty of the woman in Islam?
Women are beautiful for themselves
because they should be respected.
Are you looking at the shape? Is that
the way to appreciate someone as a
sex object or sex symbol? This is
gross disrespect for women and
islam has said you should lower your
gaze, not be interested in women
for sexual values which is what the
society has reduced women to.
The woman is a human being and
she should be respected as such.
The beauty of a woman should be
appreciated and enjoyed by her
husband not by men of the public.
Do you have any advice for the
winner being a Nigerian?
She has the responsibility to study
and understand her religion properly
and it’s her personal responsibility.
She shouldn’t play to the gallery.
Ultimately, she has to answer to her
Lord one day. Ignorance should not
be an excuse.
