Manchester City Midfielder “Yaya Toure” was named African footballer of the year on Thursday.
He tired out Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel of Nigeria; choose by Africa’s national team coaches. Toure’s fellow Ivorian Didier Drogba, two-time recipient and the Galatasaray striker, was third.
The growing star after taking Award declares that “To be the winner today is unbelievable,” and he said that he was very happy and very, very proud”.
His performances fascinated attention from Europe, playing for clubs in several European leagues. Toure played for
Beveren in Belgium, AS Monaco in France,Metalurh Donetskin Ukraine and Olympiacos in Greece.
In 2007, the rising player moved to Barcelona, playing over 100 matches for the club and he was part of the historic 2009 Barcelona side which gained six trophies in one schedule year.
Yaya Toure then entered to Premier League club Manchester City in 2010; there he has since scored a number of key goals for the Citizens, most remarkably the only goals in the 2011 FA Cup Final and semi-final.
Toure was contributory in helping Ivory Coast qualify for its third straight World Cup finals in Brazil, scoring four goals in the six qualifiers that he played.
The 30-year-old player is also a driving power at the heart of Manchester City’s midfield and merely Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o with four, has gained more African player of the year awards than Toure.
Toure joined a U.N. campaign against poaching in October; warning the slaughter of elephants threatens their very presence in Africa.
Nigeria cleared all of the other major honors at a gala in Lagos, the seaside commercial capital of the country.
The best coach of the year was given to Stephen Keshi after stimulating the fortunes of the national team and leadingthe Super Eagles to their first African Cup win in 20 years.
Al Ahly achieves Award of Africa’s club of the year for the fifth time.
